META-M 2900: High rate Al deposition. Optimized uniformity barrier results obtained from a 2900 mm width roll-to-roll coater

The substrate films obtained from the orientated film technology is advanced and the characteristics attained with bi-axially orientated films ideally meet the protective demands of flexible packaging. As such, the food packaging industry demands metalized polymer bi-axial orientated films possessing a defined barrier against permeation of gases, moisture and flavor. However, this industry considers the defect free, superb barrier properties and uniform coating in both transverse and machine directions for metalized aluminium as the major criteria to assess the productivity of roll to roll web coaters. Although wider width machines than 2900 mm are available in the market to yield higher productivity, this report focuses on the aspect of increasing the productivity with respect to an extreme high rate deposition evaporator at optimized uniformity and barrier properties.
