GNSS Expert Witness Evidence in Australian Courts

This is the fourth in a series of papers examining the use of GNSS data in court as evidence. This paper reports on a study of Australian cases that use GNSS data and expert witnesses. It reports on how the nature and frequency of these cases is evolving over time, and notes the different types of GNSS evidence used, requiring different types of input from the expert. We recommend an expert witness checklist, compiled by conducting a mapping exercise of processes and data sources for the checklist. We also make some recommendations regarding GNSS receiver data logging standards, using National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 0183 communication protocol as an example, based on the premise of supporting GNSS evidence and expert witnesses.
