The aim is to create a metric or index of colour rendering properties of illuminants which minimises the subjectivity in the design of the index. Significant progress has been made towards this goal, and the task that remains may be simply to understand the adaptation of the human eye to illuminants. This strongly suggests the analysis also provides a useful tool for understanding certain aspects of chromatic colour vision, such as colour discrimination.
