The proposed countermeasures and modifications decreased the average recliner sound pressure level of the original design by 6dBA. Gains were made by attention to (1) reducing the number of internal components, (2) precision tolerance in critical components subject to rattle and (3) improvement of the surface finish quality in key components. No conclusive correlation between the vibration spectrum and sound pressure level could be obtained. The correlation is not obvious due to unpredictable coupling of vibrational modes of the complex shaped system. The development of a production-line test requires the further development of a model of radiated sound due to vibration.
