Tuned vibration absorbers are effective devices for vibration control in the presence of tonal excitation. Ideally the damping in the device is zero and its natural frequency is tuned to the excitation frequency, giving an antiresonant notch in the frequency response of the system. However, when the -properties of the host structure or absorber change or the excitation frequency varies they become detuned and their performance can degrade to an unacceptable level. In this paper an electromagnetic device with an adaptive shunt impedance is described. The shunt is implemented synthetically to allow the device to track a varying excitation frequency. This ensures that the system has optimal performance throughout a large range of excitation frequencies.
