We will introduce the recent development of a new slag heat recovery system, which consists of a roll-type continuous slag solidification process and a slag heat recovery process. This work is conducted as one of the COURSE50 national projects in Japan. The main objective of this project is to provide the thermal energy recovered from steelmaking slag for CO_2 separation. For the mechanical designing of the heat recovery chamber, we evaluated the heat transfer characteristic in the slag packing bed. The heat transfer characteristic in blast furnaces had been studied previously based on Ranz-Marshall model~(1)2)3)). But the shape of the slag solidified with this process is platelike, which is very different from that of cokes or sintered ores. In this work, we evaluated the effect of the shape of packing materials on the heat transfer coefficient during heat recovery by the experimental method and simulation model.
