Decompression Laminectomy With and Without Aperius Interspinous Device: Matched-pair Analysis of Minimum 2 Years Prospective Outcomes

The aim of this matched-pair analysis of prospectively collected 2 years outcomes is to investigate thelong-term safety and efficacy of decompression laminectomy with ISD augmentation.Between January 2008 to January 2010, 41 consecutive patients, who underwent single-level L4/5percutaneous insertion of titanium ISD with accompanying decompression laminectomy, were included in thestudy. They were matched with 41 comparable patients who underwent decompression laminectomy alone.At 6 months, patients with ISD augmentation had better radiographic and clinical outcomes ascompared to patients who had decompression laminectomy alone (p<0.05). At 2 years, there is loss ofimprovement of radiographic outcomes to levels similar to pre-operation (p>0.05). Erosion of L4 and L5 spinousprocesses were also noted. 2 patients required removal of titanium ISD within 6 months due to back discomfort.
