Interaction of the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) with the electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of Ru(bpy)_3~(2+) in acetonitrile was studied. The analyte greatly reduces the light made during the annihilation mechanism yielding ppb level detection. The mechanism is thought to be EEC during reduction which reduces the light by oxidizing the Ru(bpy)_3~+ before it can react with Ru(bpy)_3~(3+).
