Differenze di genere, Sintomi Psicopatologici e qualità di vita nei pazienti in trattamento con Interferon: Risultati di uno studio prospettico

The awareness of being HCV positive and IFN therapy have a significantly negative impact on the quality of life both in patients with HCV in pretreatment and in those in the course of IFN therapy.This prospective study includes 32 patients with hepatitis C that have been evaluated before starting the antiviral therapy with peg-interferon and then followed up in the first, third and sixth months of therapy with interferon.Our research shows a gender difference - detectable only before starting the treatment - related to a deterioration in the quality of life which is more evident in males than in females. During the period of treatment with Peg-interferon α + ribavirin, only two patients did not come to the end point of our study because of psychopathological adverse events. This means demonstrate that, with adequate support, even patients prone to develop mood or anxiety can be treated with Peg-interferon α, and that a life-time psychiatric diagnosis is not an "a priori" criterion for exclusion.
