World Nuclear Association’s Stewardship Initiative – The International Assessment and Reporting of Sustainable Development Performance in Uranium Mining

This presentation reports on the progress made on the deployment of a recent World Nuclear Association (WNA) initiative, launched in 2011, which aims at gradually establishing – between miners (suppliers) and utilities (buyers) of uranium – a common international assessment and reporting standard for sustainable development performance in uranium mining. One of the main goals is to establish a process to assess and report on the sustainable development performance of uranium miners in line with a related WNA policy called Sustaining Global Best Practices in Uranium Mining and Processing – Principles for Managing Radiation, Health and Safety, Waste and the Environment which has been endorsed in early 2008 by the WNA global membership of uranium mining producers. Another key goal is to share ‘best practice’ on a global basis with a view to raising performance and standards everywhere. This WNA initiative also covers for uranium miners’ effort in other sustainable development aspects such as corporate social responsibility. One of the unique features of this dynamic initiative is to practically enhance the industry stewardship in sustainable development through ongoing business relations between miners (suppliers) and utilities (buyers). The presentation will outline the role of the Australian uranium industry in the initiative.
