An extensive investigation using InfraRed (IR) diagnostics for inspection of Non-ceramic Insulators (NCI) sponsored by the "NCI Project" clients has been performed at STRI during 1997-2003. The main sponsors of this research were the following power companies: Statnett (Norway), Svenska Kraftnat, Vattenfall (Sweden), Entergy (USA) and Tohoku Electric Power (Japan). Other power companies that contributed to the funding were: Fingrid and Elforsk (Scandinavia), AEP (USA) and Powerlink (Australia). Two manufacturers, NGK (Japan) and Glasforms (USA) contributed with test specimens. The results of the project were partially presented in, however the complete results were not allowed to be published for a period of 5 years after the finishing of the project. Thus, they are properly presented for the first time in this document.
