The multilayer coextrusion process was utilized to produce multilayer films with enhanced mechanical properties through selective manipulation of layer thickness and addiction of physical and chemical compatibilizers. Multilayer films consisting of elastomeric thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) confined by rigid polystyrene (PS) layers were produced with layer thicknesses ranging from 1 to 167 μm with constant film thickness of 0.5 mm. 5 wt% block copolymer Polystyrene-b-ethylene-butylene-b-polystyrene (SEBS) was added as physical compatilizer and AlCVstyrene (0.7 wt%/ 0.3wt%) were added as chemical compatibilization inducing Friedel-Crafts grafting reaction at the interface between PS and TPV layers. The effects of SEBS, AlCVstyrene and number of layers on the mechanical properties of PS/TPV multilayer films were explored. The results showed that increasing toughness and homogeneous shear deformation were obtained with decreasing layer thickness and incorporation of physical and chemical compatibilizers.
