The shipping industry has undergone major changes during the last several decades due to technical developments, automation and increased competitiveness. The consequences of these changes have been reduced manning on board and changes in task and crew demands. These developments have also required more technically advanced ships with high demands on profitability and reliability. By combining augmented reality systems and artificial intelligence the next generation of simulators can be created for use in the ship design process. Simulation-based prototyping embraces the evaluation of the design to pursue a safe and healthy work environment, optimization of the tasks to be performed and reduction of post-construction alterations and retro-fitting. Simulation used in the design process provides a creative meeting place where the end users are given the opportunity to participate in the planning and design of the ship. The ship builders, ship owners, crew members, classification societies and maritime administration can gain a better understanding of the requirements that need to be in place during the design. Once the design process is complete, the simulation environment can give the crew an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the ship and train to critical scenarios prior to joining the vessel in accordance with the requirements articulated in STCW Chapter I. The purpose of this paper is to identify how current technologies, in the hands of subject matter experts, can improve the evaluation of ship's engine room design, training and safety organization.
