An aim of this study is to analyse different kinds of roles for nuclear power in a future smart energy system. It is assumed that future energy system will include lots of fluctuating renewable generation capacity such as solar and wind power. In a current energy system the nuclear power has a "base-load" role. In the future system it is possible that nuclear power will increasingly participate in load balancing, especially when fossil fuel generation will phase out. This work analyses the potential of nuclear being more than solely baseload production of electricity. Different kind of nuclear power production alternatives are studied such as centralised power plants versus decentralised Small Modular Reactors (SMR). Developing renewables and nuclear for electricity generation, together with energy storage and smart grid technologies, could help reduce significantly the share of fossil fuel (essentially coal and gas) in electricity generation.
