The proposed Filterable PM emission limits will be difficult to achieve for some existing large boilers - other existing boilers will be o.k.. Dry control technologies such as multi-clones and ESPs are often the existing technology on older solid fuel power boilers and in many cases remain an industry preference. Most of the ESP vendors from B&W, Scheuch, Nuendorfer, PPC, and Hamon-RC can provide "performance guarantees" to meet the proposed PM limits on existing boilers. If mills are intent on staying with "dry" control technology, HCI reduction must be a consideration in the decision - this is a case where ceramic bag filters may be an effective add-on option. Other mills may have preferences for wet technologies such as wet ESPs and/or wet scrubbers. For new coal fired boilers, dry technologies will likely struggle to meet the proposed PM emission limits. No matter the choice of technology, mills will be focusing more time and resources vetting equipment capabilities and planning capital expenditures to achieve compliance -- and focusing more effort on optimizing combustion efficiency where there is potential payback.
