The steam production In a Recovery Boiler is a key outcome in parallel of the recovery process. Carryover from the combustion process in the convection pass results in a deposit mechanism that hinders the steam production process due to its insulating effect on the heat exchangers. The success of deposit removal determines not only the overall boiler efficiency, but also the online availability of the boiler. By applying an energy balance around each heat exchanger in the recovery boiler, knowledge is gain as to where and how fast the heat transfer efficiency decays. Using this knowledge to effectively clean the convection pass ensures that the steam production stays at its peak while available heat in the convection pass is used appropriately, resulting in an increased boiler efficiency. This case study will demonstrate how monitoring the heat transfer efficiency and triggering soot blowing at the right time and the right places results not only in an improved boiler performance but also in an increased equipment reliability.
