Kraft paper mill energy costs can be better managed with diversity in the types of fuels available, to take advantage of fluctuating prices. However, fuel delivery systems are often designed for only one fuel type (solid, liquid, or gas), which limits the ability to use some of the most economical fuels, without multiple delivery systems. New mixing technologies have led to the development of colloidal fuel dispersions using coal, petroleum coke, and asphaltite. These non-settling liquid fuels have the handling characteristics of fuel oil, and have been demonstrated in conventional oil-fired boilers. This paper discusses the technology, trial results, and implications for the use of colloidal fuel dispersions derived from less expensive solid fuels.
