A 1-bit reconfigurable reflectarray (RRA) element with independent dual-band phase controlling capability is designed and analyzed. Two PIN diodes are placed at the orthogonal sides of the rectangular microstrip patch. By switching them ON or OFF individually, the resonant property of the patch is tuned, and thus, independent 180° phase difference at 12.5 GHz and 14.25 GHz is achieved. Two sets of biasing circuits that are able to isolate DC/RF signals effectively at both frequencies are elaborately designed. Element simulations demonstrate good 1-bit phase controlling performance with optimized isolation between two frequencies, laying a solid foundation for the practical realization of functional 1-bit dual-band RRA in the future.
