A Flat Luneberg Lens Antenna for Wide-Angle Beam Scanning

A compact multi-beam flat Luneberg lens antenna operating at Ka-band is proposed and designed. The lens antenna consists of six dielectric layers and two parallel plates. A linear antenna array with 11 E-shaped patch antenna elements is employed to feed the lens antenna. The aperture size of the lens is 80×5 mm~2, while the lens antenna has narrow beams in the azimuth plane and wide beams in the elevation plane, respectively. Thanks to the usage of the transformation optics, the focus-to-diameter (F/D) of the proposed flat lens antenna is small as only 0.375. Simulated results show that the antenna has wide-scanning ability (up to ±60° in the azimuth plane) and high aperture efficiency (over 60% at the axis direction).
