Novel Polymer Technology for Improved Productivity Quality of Unbleached Kraft Containing Packaging Grades

Packaging and board manufacturers are increasingly looking to improve their operational efficiencies and find cost effective usage of high yield kraft pulps. Historically, it has been challenging to improve productivity with chemical solutions on packaging grades using a furnish predominately made with a high yield kraft. This typically becomes more difficult when production is done under acid conditions often in the presence of aluminum sulphate (alum). A novel amphoteric dry polymer has been developed which has demonstrated high efficiencies in liner board production utilizing high yield kraft pulps. The polymer facilitates increases in sheet consolidation by not only increasing sheet dewatering "chemical drainage" in the forming section of the paper machine, but achieves this without hindering press dewatering, typical of many traditional retention and drainage polymers. The higher level of sheet consolidation can be utilized to increase productivity or reduce drying energy. In addition, increases in total solids and small particle retention, including hydrophobic particles, are also typical, reducing wet end additive use and the propensity for machine deposition. These features allow this technology to provide consistent positive return on investment (ROI).
