Operation of Germany′s Largest Oilfield Mittelplate and Planning Further Exploratory Drilling in UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Enclaves

Mittelplate is Germany’s largest oilfield and has been operated by RWE Dea AG for more than 25 years. The partner company in this venture is WINTERSHALL Holding GmbH. The oilfield is located in the southern part of the tidal flats on the territory of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein about 7.5 km off the shoreline. (Fig. 1) Also additional oil reserve po- tential has been identified in the neighborhood of the Mittelplate oilfield and south of Mittelplate in the mouth of the river Elbe on the territory of the German state of Lower-Saxony. A total of four exploration wells are planned to be drilled.
