Thermoplastic polyurethanes based on polyester polyol building blocks from a 100% renewable plant based source, Inherent~(TM) CI 8 diacid, have been synthesized and compared to similar polyurethanes made with adipic acid. The crystallinity and melting point of the CI 8 polyols allow them to be used in a standard TPU synthesis process without significant modification. The resulting TPUs based on CI8 diacid display very high crystallinity, good moisture and solvent resistance, low temperature elasticity, and high temperature mechanical properties, making them potentially suitable for demanding applications such as automotive undercarriage and fuel lines, hot melt adhesives, high performance coatings, and sports equipment.
