Cranial surgery may be needed to remove/debulk intracranial masses, debride and flush intracranial abscesses, correct cranial defects, remove hematomas and bone fragments after trauma, or place shunts to reduce hydrocephalus and other space occupyingfluid pockets. The reason for surgery is important to keep in mind post-operatively to make sure you attend to specific patient needs. Was there a shunt placed that may occlude or get infected? Was there a tumor that requires post-operative radiation? Was there head trauma requiring more intensive care? The approach a surgeon takes to the cranial cavity will also depend on the reason for surgery, but each approach has it's own unique complications to monitor.
