Specifications for cleaner fuels imposed these last decades a drastic reduction of sulfur content in gasoline. However, an important part of the gasoline formulation is the very olefinic light fraction coming from the FCC unit which ensures a high octane number. Furthermore, it is also by far the most important contributor of sulfur impurities in the gasoline pool. As a result, the selective hydrodesulfurization of the FCC gasoline becomes a very challenging issue where hydrogenation (HYD) of olefins must be limited to the profit of hydrodesulfurization (HDS). Thus, the catalysts used in selective HDS units play a key role to control the HDS/HYD ratio and must be carefully designed.
