Phenol is produced mainly by the three steps so-called cumene process with several economic and ecologic disadvantages. Compared to the cumene process, direct phenol synthesis from benzene involving O2 activation in a one-step gas-phase reaction is a most desirable catalytic reaction. There has also been a surge in interest in syngas (H2/CO) by CH4 activation and reforming, which can be transformed to useful larger hydrocarbons. We report selective Pt-Re/zeolites and a new process promoted with NH3 and H2O for benzene hydroxylation. We also report the unique discontinuous property and active phase of a Ni/ordered Ce2Zr2Ox (x=7-8) catalyst in CH4 steam reforming to produce H2 and CO at H2O/CH4=1. These studies provide some implication to bifunctional catalyst design by synergetic interface.
