Historically, acids in oils were followed measurement of a total acid number (TAN), a value determined by titration with potassium hydroxide (TAN = mg KOH / g oil). Because TAN data do not correlate with many physical phenomena, petroleum acid research has taken several different paths. Some attempts to improve phenomenological correlation use separation methods to remove “interferences” from samples before TAN (or other acid) measurement. For example, distillation, caustic extraction and ion exchange chromatography have been used to pre-separation naphthenic acids for TAN titration. Similar separation methods have been used prepare samples for detailed characterization. Here we describe the effect of several common petroleum separation (preparation) techniques on (-) ESI FT-ICR MS results.
