The results of this study demonstrated that the tendons will not heal properly without suitable apposition of the tendon ends. Also, based on the results of this study, the modified Bunnell technique using 4-0 Prolene~? proved to have an insufficient coefficient of friction and too much elasticity to withstand the load placed on the tendon, even when the hind limb is immobilized. This was evidenced by the gaps noted between the tendon ends. However, the use of double stranded Ethibond Excel~? with a modified Bunnell technique provided the best apposition of the tendon ends and subsequent healing. This suture technique, in combination with the use of a custom splint and layering of bandaging material, produced the most desirable result in this model. This methodology is recommended for use in the evaluation of a bioresorbable material in this model.
