Double shear strength is a unique mechanical property typically associated with aerospace fasteners and the raw materials used to produce fasteners. The details of the double shear test are specified in NASM 1312-13. As a general rule, double shear strength has often been estimated at 60 percent of the ultimate tensile strength. This relationship has proven to be true for most of the common alloys used to produce titanium fasteners. However, some alloys designed to achieve higher strengths have deviated from this relationship. This investigation will evaluate double shear and tensile strength for alpha, alpha/beta and beta type alloys to determine if this relationship holds true for all alloy classes. The analysis will involve a detailed review of tensile strength, double shear strength, microstructure, and deformation behavior.
