Aluminum profiles - extruded from AA6060, AA6061, AA6063, AA6005A, and AA6082 are subjected to different heat tempers of T4, T5, and T6, and then specially anodized to 10, 20, or 30 microns. These profiles are then tested with and without sealing, in order to study the response of different anodizing conditions. The effect of alloy constituents such as silicon (Si) and copper (Cu) on the anodizing response and the anodic layer hardness is studied. Anodized layer hardness measurement of these alloys using both horizontal and vertical testing techniques is done. Variation of the hardness with respect to temperature of the electrolyte, acid concentration, and current density is studied with respect to microstracture. Hardness of the anodic layer is important in end applications to minimize the faction and corrosion, and to decrease the wear resistance between metal surfaces in some applications, such as hydraulic actuators, etc.
