This paper presents extrusion results of hard-alloy, thin-wall hollow profiles with a lab-scale direct hot extrusion press. A unique, multi-billet process was developed to virtually eliminate adverse stresses on the die bridge. Container and die tooling were fabricated from super alloys, to allow essentially isothermal extrusion near the solidus temperature. Extrusion ratios for the profiles extruded were 24 and 49. Speed, temperature and ram pressure data are presented. A metallographic examination of the solid-state weld region in the profile is also presented.
