The well-known Hogg & Fuerstenau (H&F) model for the estimation of mill power draw of any given mill of known dimensions and operating conditions has been long and widely used in grinding process design and optimization analyses. Since its very first publication, a slightly modified version of the H&F model has been made available through the Moly-Cop Tools? software package, for the detailed analysis of both conventional ball mills and AG/SAG mills. An expanded empirical database, with particular focus in AG/SAG applications, has been recently compiled by the author with the purpose of re-calibrating the H&F model; covering a broad range of mill sizes, conditions and ore types. The application of the H&F model to each entry of the whole set of available empirical data demonstrated its reasonable applicability with a ± 6.8% deviation error on mill power draw. Further, H&F model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with alternative mill power models, like the Morrell-C formulation.
