@@ (E)-β-Farnesene is an effective alarm pheromone in many aphid species. [1,2] It can reduce the use of insecticides at the same level of efficacy by increasing contact of aphids with the toxicant. [3] However, it is prevented in agriculture applications by its susceptibility to oxidation.[4] In a programme to develop novel chemicals for aphid control, we have designed and synthesized twelve novel analogues of (E)-β-farnesene, containing a pyrazole moiety present in several insecticides. Binding affinities to three odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) of pea aphid Acythosiphon pisum (Harris) and the repellent activities were evaluated, as well as the aphicidal properties against peach aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Among the chemicals, 3h and 3j, exhibited marked selectivity to OBP3 and displayed significant repellency against M. Persicae, possessing similar repellent activity to the lead, (E)-β-farnesene, but higher stability. While 3a and 3f showed comparable aphicidal activities to (E)-β-farnesene at the same concentration of 0. 6 mg/mL. This work demonstrates that novel analogues of (E)-β-farnesene can be detected as alarm messages, and endowed with repellent activities, as well as insecticidal properties against M. Persicae, which may be new potential aphid control agents.
