The aim of the present study is to investigate 3D large-scale vortices in a swirling turbulent jet and lean premixed propane/air and methane/air flames by using tomographic PIV. Direct 3D measurements reveal that for the non-reacting flow, the vortex core co-existed with the pair of counter-rotating spiral vortices, which were located in the mixing layers of the jet. Each vortex of the pair winded in the opposite direction to the sense of the flow swirl. This double-vortex structure was also detected in the high-swirl flames.
