In a few years there will be automotive headlamps with a resolution much higher than nowadays. At the moment four different technologies are considered to realize such matrix headlamps. Two of these technologies - the DMD- and the LCD-technique - can be operated alternatively with laser diodes or with high power LEDs as light sources. In this paper firstly the advantages and disadvantages of laser diodes compared to high power LEDs are discussed in detail. Afterwards the chances and challenges of both light sources are described if there are especially used in DMD and LCD systems. Right now it is difficult to predict which technology and which light source will succeed in the market.
