Nutrient fluxes and water quality in Kuwait Bay

The assessment of concentrations of nutrients discharge in marine waters is required for water quality control. Wastewater is the main source for the nutrients in KuwaitBay waters. The type of nutrients flux at the sediment-water interface in KuwaitBay are soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), ammonium N (NH4 +) nitrate N (NO3 -) and nitrite (NO2 -). The experiment focused on the exchange rates of SRP, NH4 + , NO3 - and NO2 - between sediments and water to evaluate their contribution to the maximum nutrient budget in the marine water. The experiment revealed that dissolved nutrient flux at the sediment-water interface through diffusion processes creates a significant contribution to the total nutrient budget in the water and plays an important role in the nutrient cycling and production of algal blooms.
