Thermal spray coatings are composed of splats, which are the building blocks of a whole coating. It is well known that the splat morphology depends on substrate temperature. It has been found that there is a transition temperature range for plasma spraying, below which the splats are fragmented and above which they are contiguous and form a disk shape. Moreover, it was reported that the preheating of the substrate improves splat-substrate contact during the solidification process, and thus ensures an enhanced heat transfer at the interface. However, few studies of the crystallographic texture of plasma-sprayed splats deposited on preheated substrate were performed. In this study, the substrate temperature effect on the crystalline structure was investigated to clarify the crystallographic texture evolution during splat formation by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS).
