Because Wongawilli technology never takes measures to the goaf, the roof strata above goaf are easy to fall in large area under some conditions, which will lead to serious disasters. Based on the mining practice in Shendong coal mine area, the advantages and disadvantages of previous hard roof control methods are analyzed according to the principle of roof handle. Four advanced plans are proposed for the control of thick and hard roof of Wongawilli face in mining at shallow coal seam, and the most reasonable plan, termed as the plan of roof border forced caving through deep hole blasting and anti-shock bulkhead, is proposed by feasibility analysis and optimization methods. The implementation principle, the shortcomings of the program, and two basic questions need to be understood are pointed out.
