Complexity in communication networks: Modelling link error gaps, traffic behavior and block-error processes

Complexity problems are affecting communication technologies in various ways, related to network topologies, application and connection layers, non linear dynamics in network control and physical links. Some of them have been addressed in the past, and chaotic models for channel transmission characteristics have been successfully designed. The statistics of traffic volume and delays in digital networks, mainly in packet switching transmission, have been the subject of far-reaching studies. Today, operating complex and layered networks while providing suitable service quality calls for using experience gained in link modeling to monitor and control the sharing of resources. The paper is intended to review some contributions to link modeling problems based on chaotic models, which appear to be very effective in simulating the burst behavior of the error process in wireless links, contributing to the refinement of the network control protocols.
