In this paper, complex summation is applied to the researches on upper mining limit of coal seams. In detail, nature, trend and equivalent fall of a fault are respectively cited as quadrant, angle and size of plain vector coordinates. An equivalent fault is thus acquired through complex summation and then put on the most unfavorable position to analyze the impact of this fault on results of research on upper mining limit. As a result, the application has successfully eliminated superimposed impact of minor faults on upper mining limit evaluation. The research is implemented at Tian'an No.13 Coal Mine of China Pingmei Group. Coal outbreak region of Coal II1 is 10km long in total with average width of 300m and estimated coal thickness of 5.2m. About 40 million tons are reserved in this region. Once mining safety is assured, about 12 million more tons of raw coals can be acquired if the upper mining limit is raised by 100m, thus bringing about economic benefit of RMB 7.2 billion. Moreover, the promotion of upper mining limit helps boost recovery rate of coal resources and extend service life of mines. Therefore, a test mining face 11010 is arranged on the westernmost working face 11020 in the mine field so as to analyze and evaluate feasibility, hydrology and geology of promoting upper mining limit. This aims to provide criteria for the rise of shallow upper mining limits.
