ESCAPED PROCESS GASES - THE UNEXPECTED IN INDUSTRIAL SHED CORROSION

The Corrosion Professional is often requested to inspect industrial sheds - a roof inspection request is common; and often, is seeking visual confirmation of the "red rust" of oxygenated iron products and for paths of water. This paper highlights that black rusts observed on the inner shed walls and roofs should be a flag that unusual and potentially aggressive chemistry is occurring. This paper discusses two case studies relating to galvanised steel sheds housing relatively new state of the art processes where significant contamination from process gases was not anticipated. The scientific approach involving alternative hypothesis generation and how this assists the risk management approach taken to the investigations, is outlined.
