ASSET RISK MINIMISATION PLANS FOM STEEL PENSTOCKS PIPELINES

With changes in design standards, operational effects, and the inevitable corrosion of ageing steel penstocks & pipelines, these assets often have a limited remaining service life. It is a requirement that all asset owners provide a safe workplace for their employees and the general public where assets are accessible to the public. The preferred method of providing this "Duty of Care" is to have a suitable inspection program whereby condition and structural assessments are carried out. These form part of an Asset Risk Minimisation Plan. For most steel pressure conduits the inspections should take place at regular intervals for the remaining service life of the asset. The inspection frequency for the asset is generally governed by the operating conditions, the asset condition and hazard level, the operating experience and confidence that no significant deterioration will occur between inspections. This paper describes Asset Risk Minimisation Plans for exposed steel penstocks and pipelines to minimise risk of failure and extend the limited remaining service life of the steel assets.
