Corrosion control is one of the vital roles of the material and corrosion specialists in all oil and gas production operations from conception to decommissioning. Developing a proactive and systematic risk-directed corrosion management program is today's best practice in challenging the unpredictable operational changes as a response to the increase in global demands for energy supply. The Corrosion Management Program (CMP) is a techno-economical driven tool which interacts with the total process for Plant Integrity & Assessment Framework (PIAF) aiming at improving safety, environmental protection, and performance reliability from the design to decommissioning of all assets in the process block. CMP complies with the risk based management requirements and the integrity assessment plan's strategic goals, which integrates human resources and the workflow activities. The pipeline is a fundamental asset for all oil and gas production processes. Each section of pipeline comprises of different materials and corrosion control methods that are specific to the operational conditions and its criticality. The failure of which, can be a major safety and environmental concern resulting to catastrophic production and capital losses. This paper discusses the industry's need to adopt a corrosion management program, the scope of pilot implementation to develop leading key performance indicators for sustainable material engineering, and the long term corrosion control decision making based on understanding of the damage mechanism rather than "justification by panic" in resolving critical pipeline operations issues. The paper highlights operators' and asset owners' investment potential in developing and adopting a corrosion management program (CMP) and how the program can assist in optimising the cost of corrosion and serving as a reference protocol between the corrosion management team, operator, and asset owner as an integrated program within a full spectrum of activities governed by a complete integrity & assessment framework.
