Electro-osmotic pulse (EOP) technology is an alternative to traditional water control techniques for concrete and masonry. EOP technology has been successful in reducing the moisture in concrete in US Army structures to levels well below 50%. EOP creates an electrical field in concrete that moves moisture present in the concrete pores away from an anode (positive electrode) toward a cathode (negative electrode). Through the proper placement of these electrodes, concrete can be maintained at a low internal relative humidity and thus alleviate many of the problems associated with high concrete moisture content. This paper describes EOP technology as well as laboratory and field tests conducted by the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center Construction Engineering Research Laboratory to address specific high moisture issues associated with concrete and masonry structures.
