ACCELERATED TESTING OF COATINGS FOE WASTEWATER APPLICATIONS

In November 2008 APAS Specification 0214, 'Coatings for Concrete used in Sewage Works,' was updated to include a requirement for accelerated sewage resistance testing. This is achieved by partial immersion in raw sewage for a period of two years. At the end of this time no blistering, cracking or integrity loss is permitted. To date there are no coatings in Australia that have met this criteria. This paper reviews the outcomes of SA Water's Environmental Testing Program for accelerated corrosion testing particularly focussing on testing for wastewater applications. Anecdotal observations are made regarding the performance of coatings in a wastewater test chamber. In light of these observations, comment is made on coating selection and approvals for coatings in wastewater applications.
