High voltage polymeric insulators also referred to as non-ceramic insulators (NCI) are subjected to electrical, mechanical, and environmental stresses Over the sendee life of the NCI these stresses degrade and age the polymer material. The electrical stresses from high electric fields (E-fields) can cause corona discharges that can be quite damaging to the polymer housing. To minimize this discharge activity on the polymer housing of NCI under both dry and wet conditions the E-fields need to be maintained at low levels This paper examines the E-fields near the energized end and on the polymeric housing of the NCI since they are normally much higher in this area.
