Transmission Line Surge Arresters (TLSA) are applied on overhead lines to improve the outage performance of transmission lines and in some cases, particularly on EHV lines to limit the magnitude of switching overvoltages. There are basically two types of TLSAs (a) Externally Gapped Line Arresters (EGLA) and (b) Non-Gapped Line Arresters (NGLA). In the USA most transmission line arresters are of the NGLA type, and therefore the focus of this paper.
