Among all thermosetting materials perhaps unsaturated polyesters and vinyl esters are the most common resins used in the market for a large variety of applications. Their practical and economical advantages have made it easier for their implementation in conventional molding practices. Their adaptability to common formulations provides simple systems that can be processed with fast reactions times and high filler loadings. Recently, new environmental concerns demand reduction and better control of styrene emissions into the environment. Several approaches have been proposed as possible alternatives to minimize monomer emissions during the curing process, leading to the use of waxes, alternative monomers and low molecular weight intermediates. Unfortunately, these approaches many times lead to systems with slower reactivity, incomplete curing, higher costs or compromised physical properties.
