New Halogen-Free Fire Retardant Resin for Mass Transportation Applications

Resins used in mass transportation applications need to exhibit good fire performance and low smoke attributes to meet government regulations. Current resin technology has significant disadvantages associated with the large amount of aluminum trihydrate filler required in the resin (e.g. density and low elongation). A new resin system has been developed to overcome these deficiencies. Composites produced from this resin are less dense and have improved mechanical properties over existing resins. Fabricating with this halogen-free resin is user friendly and similar to general purpose resins. This technology gives composite engineers new options for parts that need to meet the flame spread, smoke density, and smoke toxicity requirements of mass transportation applications.
