Approximately 280 years ago, a Swedish Chemist, Georg Brandt, isolated element 27 from cobalt ores that were used to color materials blue. The discovery of cobalt “soaps” around 1900 proved commercial as a drier in paints and printing inks. Eventually, cobalt carboxylates found use in gelation and curing of oils and polymers around the time of World War II. The metal is labeled an accelerator which provides the means to promote the de-composition of initiator into free-radicals which thereby start a crosslinking or polymerization reaction. [1]
