Analysis and Test: Impregnated Diamond Cutters for Oil Drilling Bit

Systematic testing methods of the performance of diamond/metal composite drilling segments (impregnated diamond cutters) have not come into being. This article tries to test the mechanical properties, structures and component of a certain number of impregnated diamond cutters; focuses on analysis of the relationship between the performance of typical composite diamond cutters and materials' structures, intends to study the testing methods of impregnated diamond cutters' performance. Since the 1970's, with dramatic improvement of PDC cutter's performance and the corresponding testing methods of performance are mature in terms of accuracy and effectiveness, the PDC cutters have been widely used in oil drilling, geological exploration and development projects. In recent years, the performance of diamond bits with diamond/metal sintered composite drilling cutters (also known as impregnated diamond cutters) has surpassed PDC cutters drastically in drilling particular conditions. Therefore, the product has reached to 20% in PDC cutters abroad. Considering that the international testing methods of impregnated cutters have not formed systematically; analyzing the typical materials testing methods and contrast analysis of three kinds of impregnated diamond cutters, this article studies effective testing methods of impregnated diamond cutters.
